welcome to this special july 2018 issue of digital camera

WHAT fun to be asked to ‘guest edit’ this issue! Humans have always wanted to honour the landscape and be as near to it as possible. There’s a primal need to get close to the land. Photographers, painters and poets just cannot seem to let it go: it’s as if they’ve got to bring their emotional experience of the land to life. There’s a burning compulsion to say: “I find this experience wonderful, and I need to evoke it”. The camera is a conduit to all those things. Choosing 25 landscape locations was a challenge, so I thought of places where I feel I’ve come away a better human being, enriched by having been blessed by the experience of that part of the world. The process of discovery is so illuminating…

VAL D’ORCIA DAWN, TUSCANY, ITALY PHIL MALPAS “The image was taken during our 2016 tour to Tuscany (led by Clive Minnitt and me). The Val d’Orcia in springtime is truly a special location. If conditions are right, there is often low-lying mist as the sun rises over nearby Pienza. On this day, conditions were perfect: ever since, everyone who was on the tour with us has referred to 25 May 2016 as ‘That dawn’!” CANDY-FLOSS FIELDS, ORGIVA, SPAIN PETER HENDRIE “The soft and defused almond blossom reminds me of my childhood days at the fairground, fast approaching the candy floss store. It’s why I keep returning Andalucia to lead this wonderful tour: it’s where my photographic journey began.” MIDAS TOUCH, BRUGES, BELGIUM VALDA BAILEY “This was taken during an Impressions of Bruges workshop, co-led with Doug Chinnery. The…

20.1MP COMPACT A TON OF FUN The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI packs a thrilling set of specs LIKE the previous five instalments in the RX100 range, the sixth camera features a 20.1MP 1-inch sensor. It’s what’s on the outside that is a big deal here. For the first time, Sony has used a ‘high magnification’ Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* zoom. This works out as a 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 equivalent lens – spanning the standard 24-70mm and telephoto 70-200mm focal lengths. The image stabilisation system is claimed to offer four stops of shake reduction. The back of the camera houses a touchscreen, another first for the RX100 line. The display tilts up and down over 180 degrees and 90 degrees respectively; this, combined with touch-focus and touch-shutter functions, encourages shooting from creative angles. In addition to capturing stills…
