I’m writing this month’s letter from the German city of Cologne, in the middle of winter, looking out at the Rhine as it runs through the city’s heart. It’s the same shade of sludge as the stormy sky it reflects. If this sounds rather bleak, don’t worry, I’m actually in a fairly buoyant frame of mind. The city’s annual furniture fair may not have the pizzazz of Milan’s, the panache of Paris’s showcases or the edgy design talent of London, but it’s a vitally important event nonetheless. Here, the big manufacturers show how they have developed and tweaked the prototypes hurriedly pushed out for last year’s Milan fair in April. Nine months on, they have had time to take on feedback from buyers and customers; refining colours, finishes and shapes, which…

Playing to the GALLERY Is it sculpture? Is it furniture? In Kelly Wearstler’s world, it can be both. The LA-based designer’s latest collection (below) blurs the boundaries of art and design with striking pieces such as the monolithic ‘Hume’ side tables (£3,626) and geometry-inspired ‘Esfera’ ottoman (from £1,317), reimagined this season with textural and dynamic prints. Meanwhile, the ‘Affinity Dome’ lamp (£1,238) harks back to the art deco era, while staying true to the collection’s modern, sculptural aesthetic (kellywearstler.com). WOOD FOR THE TREES To celebrate Darkroom’s 10th year, the brand has released ‘Woodernism’, a capsule collection based on the beauty of wood and its functional qualities. It includes the six-piece ‘Blok’ series (left), with items hand-built from ash in north-east England and stained with bold water-based pigments. ‘We wanted to use the material,…

The Danish designer founded Earth Studio in 2018 with manufacturing brand Mater. Here, she discusses her sustainable approach and latest furniture design, the ‘He & She’ chairs. I’ve always been creative, with parents who were very interested in art, architecture and furniture design. From an early age, my father taught me there’s a huge difference between good and bad design. My Scandinavian roots and conscious approach to design will always be visible in my work. Architects have a great responsibility. They design life’s framework and have to grasp human behaviour. I wanted to embrace sustainable thinking with the ‘He & She’ chairs, while celebrating one of my biggest inspirations: the Bauhaus school. The biggest challenge was to create a light and sculptural but comfortable chair. It took time to get the…

What was the starting point for the ‘Kuru’ collection (above)? Iittala briefed us to create a series of home displays that were both sculptural and functional. Kuru means ‘gorge’ – the shape is the result of a sculpting process where matter is removed by rotating geometric shapes around cylindrical volumes. How do you envisage these vessels being used? The collection as a whole is meant to be used as a place where you can put objects that you don’t want to stow away in a drawer, but that you also don’t want to use as a decorative item. The French term vide-poche refers to a bowl kept near the front door where you empty your pockets on arriving home – ‘Kuru’ bowls serve that exact purpose. You can put your items…
