editor's letter

Hello! My name’s Kate and I enjoy a good gossip as much as the next person (I’m not proud of it). According to experts a whopping 60% of adult conversations centre around someone who isn’t there. Shocking? Yes. Believable? Absolutely. But it turns out that gossiping the right waymight actually be good for us. It can work as a stress reliever, motivate us to do better, and acts as a sort of social super glue. So if you want to gossip withoutthe guilt find out how on p33. Do you tend to reach for your wallet when you need a boost? Maybe when you’re sad or angry – or happy, it works that way too – and know a little spoil will lift your spirits? Then you, like so many of…

'i've always been fiercely independent'

Lisa was born in Durban before her family moved to Mid Illovo in KZN. After matriculating at St John’s Diocesan School for Girls, she studied personal training through the Health & Fitness Professionals Academy, before spending two years in Wales. She returned to SA in 2001 and started her own personal training business at the age of 19. Since then she has appeared on The Biggest Loser South Africa as the women’s trainer for the show, and expanded her fitness business to include everything from diet and fitness programmes, to maternity products and supplements. She moved from Durban to Joburg in 2016 and now lives in Parkhurst with her husband Stafford Masie, 44, daughter Bella Sky, two, and their dog, Harley. I’ve always been very active, and I loved living on…

fashion news

DOWN TO EARTH Natural fabrics like linen, silk and pure cotton are having a real fashion moment, so you can stay cool in the heat, and look on-trend at the same time. Don't worry, the once unflattering linen pants suit from the ’90s is long gone. In its place you'll see earthy tones, and old-school crochet, as well as new silhouettes and more playful designs. Invest in the trend with a peek-a-boo cotton playsuit or a flattering silk maxi-dress. For the perfect pairing, take your style cues from beloved fashion brand Forever New; pair natural fabrics with chunky accessories. Linen jumpsuit, R1 299, Forever New. IF YOU ONLY BUY 1 THING... What’s the best way to get back on the workout wagon? Having a cupboard full of cute activewear, of course! Your favourite…

Feminine touch Over the masculine tailoring trend? Then layer a feminine bustier over a structured shirt for the best of both worlds. Luxe look Patterned cuffs are just begging to be shown off Invest in a universally flattering fit-and-flare dress that mimics an appealing hourglass shape. Pricey? Yes. But you’ll wear it for years to come. Long and lean Play with proportions by teaming culottes with a longline shirt or tunic – it’s a fashion editor’s secret weapon to looking instantly taller and slimmer. Head to toe Swap a boring grey pants suit for this season’s hottest colour: not-so-mellow yellow. Keep the silhouette feminine by choosing a blazer with a nipped-in waist. Throw ona cami to make it work appropriate Print parade Trousers have had a glam-over this season with chic textures and prints. Mix and match yours with a printed…

don’t tell me i can’t… ask him to marry me

When my friend invited me to a wedding in 2015, I almost didn’t make it because I was due to travel to New York for a work trip. I knew how important my friend’s big day was, so I opted out of the work trip, and attended her wedding instead. When I arrived at the wedding, a guy caught my eye, but we weren’t introduced to one another until much later on in the evening. His name was Sam, and I later found out that he had taken note of me too. I made a comment about Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings earlier in the day, and he is a huge fan of both books. We had other things in common – Sam was writing a book at the…
