Hello! With us fast approaching the middle of the year, it’s normal to feel a little frantic or overwhelmed. But did you know that your to-do list might actually be the thing that’s slowing you down and raising your stress levels? Experts say that’s because of something called the Zeigarnik effect, which causes us to fixate on the items that we didn’tget to, rather than focusing on the jobs we ticked off. The solution? Making an ‘it’s done’ list. Not only will it give you a sense of accomplishment, it will lessen that nagging guilt feeling. Win-win! And that’s just one small way that you can cut stress and carve out some extra time for yourself. With all the time you’ll save by not agonising over your ever-growing to-do list, you’ll…

'say "yes" to every opportunity'

As a child, one of Elle’s favourite pastimes was dressing her brother in her school tie and roping him in to present the day’s news. Her love of TV went beyond an eagerness to watch her favourite series though; she had a hunger to be in front of the camera. But, with no one to guide her, her goal remained something of a pipe dream. That’s until she decided that her ideal job wasn’t going to find her – she’d have to build it. Which she did, with a drill and a love of DIY. After two seasons of presenting Home Made Easyon DStv’s The Home Channel, she’s now producing her own content, in-between a busy career as a voiceover artist, producer, lifestyle blogger and talent agent. Elle lives in…

CRAFTY CROCHET Forget the outdated ideas you had about crochet – this certainly isn't the kind of crochet your grandma used to make. These new-look knits for winter combine both sophistication and style, and they go with everything. Pair voluminous tops with slim or straight-leg trousers, or opt for a crochet dress with a slip if you’re feeling a little more daring. Either way, Zara's new A/W collection will have you kitted out and looking on trend – you'll be cosy too. Crochet tops, from R679, Zara. IF YOU ONLY BUY 1 THING... If you tend to live in your boots all winter, you'll be thrilled to learn that this season's version of the ever-popular cowboy-style are sleeker, shorter and (best of all!) printed. Wear them with long, boho dresses or jeans –…

rework your wardrobe

Va-va-volume A bright, bell-sleeved knit will add instant style to any winter look. Go sports luxe The padded puffer is this season’s ‘it’ jacket. Team it with an athleisure-inspired dress for youthful flair. Side stripes will make you look taller and slimmer Track star Smarten up your sports wear with last season’s hottest buy: the check blazer. Top-to-tail Make a style statement with one colour from head to toe. Then use varying textures, prints and hues to add extra contrast to your outfit. Apprehensi ve about all that colour? Go for bold accessories instead A masculine fashion touch Think outside the box when styling a floaty dress. Utility boots and boyish outerwear will add the right amount of edge. Crop it Swop your old biker jacket for a cropped version. The flattering length works well with dresses and pants. Flared jeans are perfect for…

easy style updates

The new suit A more feminine version of the power suit, go for soft pastels in flattering silhouettes to amp up the style factor. Or mix and match to get more bang for your buck! The paper-bag waist This trend has been around for a while but it’s been given a modern makeover with cargo-style trousers – the perfect mix of masculine and feminine touches. The graphic stripe We’ll be borrowing from the boys this winter. Stripes are having a real fashion moment and you can wear yours with everything from midi-skirts to jeans. Top tip! Tuck your top into high-waist trousers or skirts, to create an hourglass silhouette. The bold accessories Berets, oversized earrings, chunky knits, faux fur and round handbags – OTT touches will show you’re in the fashion know. The bigger (and bolder) the better! The checked…
