classic iron, swiss style

At the industry functions, we gun writers get invited to, there is usually a lot of ammo to be shot, and many firearms to shoot ammo from. (Yes, it is a dirty job, but someone has to do it.) And inevitably, there are contests. So, there I was on the line, shooting with Phil Strader. Phil is the pro shooter who inhabits the SIG house, and I have known him for something going on two decades now. We’ve never competed head to head before, because in all that time we were usually in different Divisions in a match. (Lucky me.) Not this day. We were shooting the new SIG P210 Standard, an all-steel 9mm pistol. Someone walked up as Phil was taking his run. “What are you shooting?” “The new SIG P210 Standard.” “Oh…

10+1 sccy firearms’ new .380 pistols

To be frank, I was caught by surprise when the lowly .380 ACP suddenly exploded in popularity. Since its rise it has eclipsed previously highly regarded service calibers, such as the .357 SIG and 40 S&W, which had been commonly recommended for concealed carry. Today, many prefer the “short” 9mm for personal protection. Why carry a pistol chambered for .380 ACP instead of a harder hitting cartridge? The primary reason is due to their small size, light weight and how easy they are to both carry and shoot. Over the past 10 years, .380 ACP handguns have been continually reduced in size and weight until they became similar to many .32 ACP models. This new crop of .380 ACP pistols drop easily into a pocket, yet possess improved terminal performance…

ignoring core purpose makes 2nd amendment more vulnerable to infringements

“Col. Ethan Allen, later of the Continental Army and Vermont Militia, may have originated guerrilla warfare in the 13 colonies,” a Military.com profile recalls. “When New York’s British governor Tryon attempted to appropriate the land known as the New Hampshire Grants for the crown, Allen organized his Green Mountain Boys to protect the settlers’ rights in the area.” The great man, whose statue now stands in front of the Vermont Statehouse (at least until useful idiot social just warriors pull it down), and many of the local militias of the time, were outlaws. So, according to the Crown, were the Continental Army and the Congress that “authorized” it. So were “the people” behind it all, who supported the War of the Rebellion and took up arms against a tyrannical government. There’s no…

greek small arms of world war ii — part iii

On April 17, 1944, the Greek People’s Liberation Army forces (ELAS) attacked a National and Social Liberation movement regiment (EKKA), capturing and executing the popular Colonel Psarros and many of his men. This action drove many liberals and moderates to the right, and cemented the rift between the two segments of the Greek population. The Political Committee of National Liberation/Mountain Government (PEEA) found support among Greek armed forces in Egypt, many of whom were well-disposed towards National Liberation Front (EAM). A mutiny erupted in which the mutineers demanded that a Government of National Unity be established, based on PEEA principles. The mutiny was suppressed by British forces and Greek troops loyal to the exiled government. By the summer of 1944, the Red Army was advancing into Rumania and towards Yugoslavia putting German…

the fn-fal rifle part i

The last decades of the 20th century saw years of unending conflict around the globe. Except for the American involvement in Vietnam, many were guerilla wars between national liberation movements and their former colonial rulers, civil/political/ ethnic conflicts and fighting between newly independent states. On the nightly news, one saw scenes of conflict, violence, and bloodshed in such diverse regions as the Congo, Northern Ireland, Southeast Asia, Egypt, Biafra, Israel, Nicaragua, India, Lebanon, Rhodesia and Argentina. But if, like me, you were interested in the weapons being used by the various participants you soon realized that one rifle seemed to show up in every trouble spot in the world: the FN-FAL. The FN Fusil Automatique Léger (Light Automatic Rifle) was a product of the famous armaments firm of Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de…
