It isn’t like the concept of a bullpup rifle is anything new. No, the British bullpup rifle proposed as a new service rifle, post WWII wasn’t the first, not even close. The idea is almost as new as smokeless powder, when it was finally possible to design a rifle where you didn’t need to keep your face five feet away from the blast of igniting black powder. The Thornycroft bolt-action of 1901 was one of the earliest ones. We’ll overlook just how you are supposed to work the handle of a bolt action, with the receiver planted against your shoulder, and move on up into the middle of the century. The British EM-2 was, to steal a marketing phrase “As modern as tomorrow.” It was a bullpup with a built-in optical…

“There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” was known before Robert Heinlein showcased it in his novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress . The concept is simple and proves the uncaringness of the universe. Nothing comes without a cost. Nothing can be gotten without some expenditure, and nothing is free. I had a professor explain the same principle but used it while describing the three laws of thermodynamics, in terms we could all grasp before our brains melted under the mathematics to come: “You can’t win. You can’t break even. You can’t get out of the game.” And so it is with all small arms. They all cost you in weight, recoil, ammo consumption and effectiveness. They all deliver in terms of accuracy, power and ergonomics. It…

FAL magazines come in two flavors; Inch and Metric. The RFB uses the Metric, which is by far the more common. The Metric mags use a punched-out triangular lip on the front face of the magazine as a locking tab. The Inch pattern mags use a brazed-on steel bar. Much more durable, but no-one has ever complained about the durability of the metric mags, so who cares? You do, because the two are not interchangeable. I have been told that the smaller lip of the Metric fits into, and feeds reliably, in Inch-pattern rifles. I have never had anything but miserable luck trying that, so I keep my mags separated. Used, good condition, Metric mags cost a dollar or two more than polymer Magpul mags, so you aren’t going to…

The RFB gas system is adjustable, so you can tune it to work with suppressors. I took the opportunity, with the short length of the RFB, to use a short suppressor, an Amtac mantis-S. This is a reflex suppressor, that is, it is designed to have a big initial expansion chamber that slides back over the barrel. The threaded mount portion is a bit more than a third of the way up inside of the suppressor, so the net length is not nearly what the Mantis-S first appears to be. Another big advantage of the reflex design is that the big expansion chamber decreases gas back pressure, and face-annoying gas pulses. Of course, with the RFB and its chamber sealed from you, you’d never feel that anyway. I found that…
