we’ve got you covered

The world is an uncertain place right now – from political upheaval to looming threat of climate disaster. The last thing you need adding to your worries is the risk of spending your hard earned cash on a new drum machine only to find it’s a total dud. In all honesty, there’s little we here at FM can do about resolving Brexit, calming political tensions or halting rising sea levels. We can, at least, help shield you from synth-buyer’s remorse with our extensive Gear Of The Year guide. So if it all comes crashing down in 2019 and you’re left cowering in a nuclear bunker or floating adrift in a sea of half-melted icebergs, at least you’ll know you didn’t waste your money on a sub-standard audio interface. We do what…

cubase 10 has arrived!

Steinberg have released version 10 of their longstanding DAW Cubase. The Hamburg firm have promised that they’ve listened to feedback to bring about some key changes to the workflow and, most notably, the UI. The update applies to the full Pro, Artist and Elements versions, all of which benefit from the new UI and an overhaul of the channel strip, which features new metering elements in each module. Groove Agent SE 5 gets an updated UI too, plus new acoustic and electronic drum content. All versions of Cubase now also support 32-bit integer and 64-bit floating-point audio for recording, importing/exporting, and converting. The new Latency Monitor will help users keep track of how much latency a project involves, and where. Pro and Artist versions have support for MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) and include…

sequential say goodbye to the prophet 12

Sequential have announced that their Prophet 12 synth is about to be discontinued, but the company is seeing it off with a limited edition ‘arctic white’ version. When we say limited, we really do mean it: only 100 Prophet 12 LEs will be made. After these have rolled off the production line, this hybrid analogue/digital instrument will be no more (unless you’re lucky enough to own one, that is). Paying tribute to the Prophet 12, Sequential boss Dave Smith says: “It’s nice to give the Prophet 12 a proper send-off with this special edition. The P12 was a real milestone for us in terms of pushing the synth envelope. As a hybrid instrument, it gave us a chance to explore the interaction of digital oscillators and analogue filters and see how far…

waves unveil a music-making pc

Music software companies moving into hardware is nothing new, but we can’t recall a plugin developer releasing their own computer before. Waves are doing just that, though: the Waves Axis One is a Windows 10 PC that’s optimised to run the brand’s plugins. The machine has been custom-designed and is built into a rugged half-rack 2U case. It’s designed to be used for live sound, broadcast and studio work, and promises rock-solid performance. It can also be used as the centrepiece of a Waves SoundGrid system. Specs include an Intel i5 8500 Processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD internal storage. On the connectivity front, the Axis One has two HDMI ports, one display port, one SoundGrid port (EtherCon connector), one Ethernet port (RJ45 connector), eight USB2/USB3 ports and one USB-C port. The…

you can now rent-to-own presonus studio one through splice

Splice already had various plugins on their Rent-To-Own scheme, Xfer Records Serum being just one of them, and now they've added a DAW to the roster. The software in question is PreSonus’s Studio One Professional: pay $16.99 a month for two years and it’s yours. The scheme kicks in after a 14-day trial period, and you can pause or cancel at any time. The difference between this and a subscription offering is that once you’ve made all your payments you get to keep the software and can put your wallet away.…
