1 CLIMATE CRISIS Scientists warn it is ‘now or never’ to avoid disaster The world can still hope to stave off the worst ravages of climate breakdown but only through a “now or never” dash to a low-carbon economy and society, scientists have said in what is in effect a final warning for governments on the climate. Greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025, and can be nearly halved this decade, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to give the world a chance of limiting future heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. The final cost of doing so will be minimal, amounting to just a few percent of global GDP by mid-century, though it will require a massive effort by governments, businesses and individuals. SPACE Rare cosmic alignment expands Hubble’s horizons The most distant star ever seen has been captured by the Hubble space telescope in images that appear to give a remarkable glimpse into the ancient universe. Light from the star, named Earendel, has travelled an estimated 12.9bn years to reach the Earth – a huge leap from the previous most distant star, which dates to 9bn years. The observations were possible thanks to a rare cosmic alignment, meaning that Earendel may be the only individual star from this epoch that we will ever see. “We almost didn’t believe it at first, it was so much farther than the previous most distant star,” said Brian Welch, an astronomy PhD student from Johns Hopkins University and lead author of the paper. “Studying Earendel will be a window into…

GOVERNMENT Police fine No 10 staff over 2021 lockdown parties Downing Street staff have been issued with fines by police over a party the night before Prince Philip’s funeral, in the first decision by Scotland Yard that Covid laws were broken inside No 10. After the Guardian revealed that fixed penalty notices were handed out to those who attended a leaving do for an aide to Boris Johnson in the Cabinet Office in June 2020, sources said those who partied into the early hours in No 10 on 16 April 2021 had also been warned they would receive fines.
