Bond’s ‘Real Man Stopper’ I enjoyed James Tarr’s article about the Walther PPK/S. I wanted to add a bit to his sidebar about the famous British secret agent. In “The Man With the Golden Gun” (the novel, not the film), Scaramanga carries a golden Colt SAA in .45 Colt. He asks Bond what he carries. Bond replies that he carries the Walther in 7.65. Scaramanga’s response of “a real man stopper” makes me question Ian Fleming’s knowledge of handguns! SCOTT TANKARD FORSYTH, GA Barrier Testing In the recent October/November issue, James Tarr had a terrific piece where Speer’s new Gold Dot G2 ammo was tested for performance through a variety of hard materials (plywood, drywall and metal). It was interesting to see his results, but what about some testing on ballistic gel with a layer…

the federal blues

FEDERAL’S SYNTECH FAMILY OF BULlets and ammunition continues to grow, and the latest addition is the company’s all-new Syntech Defense ammo. Like other Syntech loads, the Defense line features Federal’s synthetic jacket design—blue, in this case—which eliminates lead and copper fouling in the barrel and greatly reduces friction and heat. But unlike the original Syntech bullet, which features a lead core inside the polymer coating, the Syntech Defense bullet utilizes a hollowpoint design with three nose segments and a one-piece core designed for deep straight-line penetration and maximum energy transfer. Upon impact, Syntech Defense’s base penetrates 12 to 18 inches into bare ballistics gel, which is optimal because it offers plenty of penetration to stop an attacker without the risk of overpenetration. Gel testing shows the lead core continues to penetrate in…

fighting with your handgun

Our self-defense editor and co-host of “Handguns & Defensive Weapons,” Richard Nance, has a couple videos designed to make you better at defending yourself and your family from a deadly threat. “Fighting Handgun” is unique in that it’s not a “draw-and-blast” video but rather a ground-up overview of a wide variety of techniques that can help you prevail against a threat—from how to strike someone to how to shoot someone when it’s warranted to do so, and how striking and shooting work together. It does require a bit of patience because at two hours plus it’s a long video, and Nance necessarily has to start with basics such as mindset, stance, types of blows, how to deliver them and other fundamentals. But once he’s established a baseline of knowledge—which he’s really…
