trail blazers

Over the past 12 months, writing this column has been a particularly challenging task, not knowing if, by the time it is read, the world will be celebrating a joyful breakthrough or mourning some devastating reverse. How often have I chewed my pen, wishing I could seek the advice of the truly far-sighted about what was to come. So I’m delighted that in this ‘Visionaries’ issue, we have done just that. Among the contributors are the philanthropist Melinda Gates, the digital campaigner Martha Lane Fox, the transformative author Glennon Doyle and even the Dalai Lama. Meanwhile, I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Iman, the supermodel and entrepreneur who fled Somalia as a teenage refugee to forge her own path to the top of the fashion industry, breaking down…

MELINDA GATES Page 114 Named one of the world’s most powerful women by Forbes, the former general manager of Microsoft co-founded the largest-ever charitable organisation – the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – with her husband in 2000. In ‘Wonder women’, she discusses her vision for the future, the importance of gender equality in the tech industry and the need for more female leaders. Your hidden talent ‘Making up games – really elaborate ones – for the whole family. I’ve organised water-balloon tosses and a Halloween-themed ball game, complete with hurling pumpkins.’ A treasured family tradition ‘Starting family dinners by going around the table and naming one thing we’re grateful for. (I also have a soft spot for matching Christmas pyjamas.)’ Self-care is… ‘what you do in order to bring the best version of yourself…

10 things we love

1 HOPELESS ROMANTIC What do we want right now? Escapism. Forget the WFH sweatpants, this season’s fashion has embraced the kind of full-on femininity usually reserved for wedding gowns. Think pink and put a bow on top. 2 PALE AND INTERESTING Purity. Simplicity. Reset. If ever a trend was loaded with meaning, it’s S/S 21’s focus on white, exemplified by the quiet, perfect beauty of Fendi’s rose-embroidered chiffon. 3 Pet me When in doubt, downsize. The latest accessories are as cute as a kitten – and no larger. From heels to bags, make them mini; our favourite is Chanel’s phone pouch, worn around the neck on a signature chain strap. 4 SET THE STAGE Add drama for Instagram. In a year when every show needed to work digitally, whether it had a live audience or not (and…

my life, my style

I’ve always been obsessed with beautiful objects,’ says Anna Jewsbury, the co-founder and artistic director of the London-based jewellery brand Completedworks. ‘As a child, when we went on family holidays to France, I would gather shells from the beach and make them into necklaces and bracelets. I used to collect a lot of treasures – I guess I still do.’ Jewsbury, who grew up in rural West Yorkshire, attributes her early love of accessories to her mother. ‘She would empty out her jewellery box over her bed and tell me the story of each item,’ she says. ‘I suppose we all inadvertently draw on the passions of our parents.’ In 2013, with a degree in mathematics and philosophy from Oxford under her belt, Jewsbury founded Completedworks with her brother Mark. ‘Even…

GLENNON DOYLE Author and founder of Together Rising WHAT DO YOU DO TO STAY POSITIVE? ‘I think “positivity” is overrated. People who are constantly positive drive me nuts because it feels like avoidance or denial. Life is hard, the world is a mess –…

heart & soul

‘I think death is just a border – I don’t believe this can be the end,’ Luchita Hurtado told me when I interviewed her for Bazaar Art in 2019, a few months before her 99th birthday. A year later, in August 2020, she crossed that border, but just as she had foreseen, her legacy lives on in her vital, colourful artworks, and in the many touching tributes paid since her death. The latest of these is Hauser & Wirth’s beautiful new monograph on the Venezuela-born artist, whose drawings, paintings, jewellery and clothing designs were inspired by her lifelong love of travelling and fascination with the natural world. Richly illustrated with archival photographs and lavish reproductions of her work, the book is a worthy homage to a creative powerhouse for whom…
