EDITOR’ SCHOICES Summer’s lease hath all too short a date, so I’m making the most of it this month in McQueen’s airy sky-blue dress accessorised with sunny gold jewellery and, naturally, a chic pair of shades; scarlet heels add the final touch of frivolity. As I write, I can hear a children’s party in full swing, while my local park has been transformed into Glastonbury, clustered with groups of six picnicking, playing music, throwing frisbees and dancing, everyone glowing with an unaccustomed joy. It has been a long, hard winter, but at last there is light and liberty on the horizon. It seems the perfect moment to reflect on freedom; in a portfolio of brilliant essays on page 126, writers examine what it means to them – from a lyrical paean to…

KELLY MARSHALL Based in New York, the renowned photographer is currently directing a documentary on Black women in America entitled Birthing Of A Nation. She has photographed the editor of Harper’s Bazaar US, Samira Nasr, for ‘My life, my style’. Freedom is… ‘the ultimate luxury.’ Your most treasured summer memory ‘A week at the Jersey Shore was our annual summer pilgrimage. I have fond childhood memories of hanging on the beach from sun-up to sunset, building sandcastles, finding seashells and sitting in my mom’s lap as she braided my hair.’ Your sundowner drink of choice ‘A Paper Plane cocktail made with bourbon and Aperol. For his S/S 21 collection, Giorgio Armani considered how a stylish woman might navigate the post-lockdown landscape. ‘She is still concerned with looking good – if anything, her desire for beauty has been sharpened by the experience – but she wants to feel comfortable,’ he says. From the very first outfit, a perfectly cut, grey microcheck jacket and cropped trousers, to eveningwear pieces including flowing metallic floral dresses, the presentation was the epitome of classic allure. In addition, the designer’s signature pyjama pants were complemented by louche belted robe coats and oversize shirts, surely destined for workingfrom-home wardrobes. ‘Armani has never been about dressing up,’ says the designer. ‘Instead, it’s all about creating a timeless elegance that brings out the character of the wearer. That will never change.’ lucy halfhead PHOTOGRAPHS:…

my life, my style

’I ve always been a worker bee,’ says Samira Nasr from her apartment in New York City’s Park Slope, a picturesque neighbourhood of tree-lined streets and classic brownstones in Brooklyn. It’s been a year since Nasr was named the editor-in-chief of the US edition of Harper’s Bazaar after almost three decades in the fashion industry. ‘My first ever boss sat me down and handed me a book that I still have – Passage by Irving Penn – and she said, “Study this, and I’m going to give you some advice that will serve you your entire career: be impeccable with your word and work hard.” And I was like, “noted”.’ Nasr was raised in the modest Montréal suburb of Pointe-Claire along with her older brother. ‘I come from parents who were…
