The bigger picture ‘Art exists in the grey area,’ Cate Blanchett told me in her interview for this issue. She was not, of course, speaking literally – one look at the vivid cover, which brings together the actress with Es Devlin’s delicate line drawings and the colourful sensibility of the photographer Kristian Schuller, would put paid to that idea. Blanchett was talking about the way art occupies a position above that of conventional morality, inspiring emotion in the viewer even if we don’t sympathise with the artist or the subject and enabling discussion on the most difficult and divisive topics.
