healthy new year!

we’ve had a guest editor. Considering the BIG healthy food trend for 2019 is plant-based eating, it was easy to decide who to approach. It had to be Ella Mills, aka Deliciously Ella (here we are, left, catching up on content at her Mayfair deli). Ella’s diet has been plant-based since she tackled her illness and launched her blog in 2011. Turn to the back cover and flip the magazine for our special section full of her favourite plant-based recipes, plus features that are close to her heart – including why a pet can bring health benefits. Up front, Amanda Ursell helps you tackle three common reasons for weight gain: cravings for sugar, fat and carbs. She looks at the reasons we desire them, offers easy swaps and introduces three simple…

‘I’m going to do my best to fit in more exercise. I walk, dash around like crazy and do the housework as part of everyday life, but I’m going to start daily strength training exercises. Listening to the British Nutrition Foundation Annual Lecture last November, it pushed home just how quickly a lack of exercise affects our metabolism and wellbeing. The old adage “use it or lose it” is going to be my 2019 mantra!’ AMANDA URSELL is HFG’s nutrition editor. She has a degree in nutrition and a post-graduate diploma in dietetics ‘I’m hoping to get better quality sleep by reducing my screen time before bed. Evidence says this can be an easy win to get to sleep earlier, which in turn helps us get up on dark, winter mornings and…

PROTECTING US FROM PLASTIC I enjoy cooking the recipes and reading the features in your magazine. I was particularly interested in the article by Juliette Kellow on cutting down on plastics (Nov issue). Visiting Mozambique recently, I was upset to see little bits of plastic all over the beach. What should have been a beautiful, pristine paradise on the sands of the Indian Ocean was spoiled – it was such a shame. I thought your readers might be interested in my daughter’s blog: therenznest.com. She is setting up her own company to sell her recyclable and biodegradable products online. CHRISTINE GRIFFITHS Editor Melanie says: Yes, it’s important we all do our bit to protect our environment, and we’re pleased you found Juliette’s advice useful. CONGRATULATIONS The star letter writer this month wins a Stellar…
