'There’s really no point in increasing resolution if you don’t increase the frame rate.' So says Hollywood technical supervisor Ben Gervais in our interview this issue (p28). It’s an interesting point. As production and presentation pushes on through 4K to 8K, are the days of 24-frames-per-second numbered? What use is all that extra detail if it’s just going to be blurred away? Gervais envisages a film future of high frame rates (HFR) and high resolutions, with 3D thrown in for good measure, creating an experience that involves the audience 'at an emotional level.' It sounds like an entirely new art form. Having watched Gemini Man in 4K 60fps on Blu-ray, I'm intrigued by the tech, and would love to see it as it was ultimately intended – 4K, 120fps, 3D.…
