'There’s really no point in increasing resolution if you don’t increase the frame rate.' So says Hollywood technical supervisor Ben Gervais in our interview this issue (p28). It’s an interesting point. As production and presentation pushes on through 4K to 8K, are the days of 24-frames-per-second numbered? What use is all that extra detail if it’s just going to be blurred away? Gervais envisages a film future of high frame rates (HFR) and high resolutions, with 3D thrown in for good measure, creating an experience that involves the audience 'at an emotional level.' A new addition to the Chora lineup, the 826-D is Focal’s first Dolby Atmosenabled floorstander, and aims to have its listeners 'immersed in a highly realistic 3D world.' A 5in Slatefiber midbass driver and dome tweeter are mounted at an angle in the speaker’s top baffle, joined by traditional front-firing drivers in a three-way design. Pricing is still TBC, but Focal says it will 'fit' with the Chora range’s current £600-£1,300 span. KEF expands Reference CI range Claiming to 'answer the call' of cinema builders is KEF’s Ci3160REF-THX, an in-wall speaker that slots into its Reference range below the larger Ci5160.
