Compiling our retro technology feature this issue (p24) brought back some happy memories (and some nightmares – remember the curved TV craze?). But it did make me wonder if the consumer electronics industry has become …less adventurous. A number of the innovations highlighted arrived around a decade ago. Perhaps there was something in the air in 2010 that caused R&D teams to push the envelope. In 2021, companies haven't stopped developing new technology, but often these advancements are hidden within new processing chips and AI networks. These all make a difference, but much home cinema hardware looks the same from the outside now as it did a few years ago. So maybe it’s time to bring back curved TVs, or to cook up something equally bonkers – if only so…
