Once upon a time, I had a near-death experience courtesy of Velodyne. Fumbling around with the brand's reference-grade DD18+ subwoofer in a darkened room – a process which involved me putting my noggin right next to its 18in driver – I managed to coax it into action during a particularly explosive moment in the movie. I could feel my ear drums try to flee. With that in mind, it's good to see the brand back in business after some (ironically) very quiet years. And its new DB-15 subwoofer (see p62) is a bit of a beast. Also back in the spotlight are projector specialists JVC and Epson.
