The rapid rise of Netflix never ceases to astound me. The company that began life as a DVD rental outfit has now become a streaming corp so important that it gets its own button on TV remotes, and its own image preset on incoming Sony TVs (see p18). It's hard to imagine the current cultural landscape without it. But it isn't without its challengers. Amazon Prime Video is an obvious rival, and is certainly stealing a march on Netflix with its live sports streaming strategy. New-to-the-UK platforms like FilmStruck Curzon and Rakuten TV are also attempting to carve out their own niches.
