TONY WOODSGarden designerHailing from the Lake District, Tony Woods cites Dan Pearson’s work at Lowther Castle (featured in House & Garden in February 2018) as a major inspiration. He cut his teeth at nearby Larch Cottage Nurseries and now has his own landscape-design business, Garden Club London. His garden on the Kent coast is ‘set across three levels with a small vegetable garden’. While not yet a galanthophile, I can see the allure of the snowdrop. Even as a child, there was something exciting about seeing them first appearing through the frosty winter landscape – a sign that spring was not far off. My parents-in-law’s woods in Yorkshire are full of them, of all different varieties, carefully planted by my husband’s grandmother. Last year, we made a family trip to Kingston Lacy in Dorset to wander among the huge carpets of snowdrops. The year before we sought them out at Chelsea Physic Garden (for details of this year’s snowdrop activities, see page 31).
