Over the course of the past century, few people have shaped ceramics as much as Bernard Leach (1887-1979). Often described as the father of British studio pottery, he represented a new breed of practitioner who elevated pottery to an art form by taking the roles of both designer and craftsman. Today, his influence is seen across the world, not just in the work of his apprentices such as Michael Cardew and Richard Batterham, but also in contemporary potters such as Magdalene Odundo and Jennifer Lee, who won the 2018 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize.
