RUTH SLEIGHTHOLME / DECORATION EDITOR Ruth started working at House & Garden as the decoration coordinator and says she has spent the past decade ‘learning as much as possible’. During her time on the team, she has helped to curate the creative and inspiring decorating pages (from page 17) and this issue sees her in her new role as decoration editor. Ruth’s eye for design was inherited from her mother, who painted their dining room floor in brilliant block colours and would sometimes wallpaper through the night. When not working, Ruth can be found carving in stone, or helping out on her family’s farm in Yorkshire. As my husband and I embark on a decoration project of our own and I find myself often surrounded by a dozen paint charts and a deluge of fabric samples that I have gathered over the past year, I keep returning to the work of Chester Jones and David Mlinaric. There is something about the restraint in their use of colour and pattern, and their thoughtful curation of pieces of furniture and of art that keeps drawing me back when I am feeling overwhelmed by the choices that face me. Both use pattern and colour, but it is carefully considered, even understated, allowing the rooms and the individual pieces to speak for themselves and for life to add the sparkle.
