BILLY COTTON / INTERIOR DESIGNER Having studied industrial design at New York’s Pratt Institute, Billy began freelancing as a designer making furniture. When his friends asked for help with their houses, he began to see how ‘industrial design could be transformed into a career in interior design’. After a stint of unemployment, he was commissioned by artist Cindy Sherman to design her farmhouse and, from there, things began to take off. He founded his interior design practice in 2011 and was added to the AD100 list in 2017. Born in New England, he finds New York City constantly inspiring and is always looking for new ways to ‘transform the concrete jungle into a place you want to live’. I somehow look forward to and slightly dread September – the back-to-school, back-to-reality feeling – in equal measure. It’s not that I haven’t been working in the weeks before, but that they are at a rather different pace: less frenetic, with fewer meetings to crowd the diary. I rather like it, for a time. But, come September, the call of the London Design Festival and Focus at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is strong, luring me back into action and reigniting my thirst to be out and about, discovering what’s new and meeting talented, creative people. 01 Pictalab Milano Founded by Orsola Clerici and Chiara Troglio, this design studio produces bespoke, hand-painted papers. The duo’s exquisite work, ranging from floral scenes and geometric patterns to textured, painterly finishes, is nothing short of extraordinary. Orsola (seated) and Chiara are pictured here at their installation during this year’s Milan Design Week (where, interestingly, the decorative arts played a far more prominent role than in previous years). Pictalab highlighted the new ‘Portaluppi Herbarium’ collection, a collaboration with interior designer Nicolò Castellini Baldissera, which pays homage to the work of the late architect Piero Portaluppi (known for Milan’s Villa Necchi Campiglio).
