Back in the 1970s, when I was a teenager, I went to California to stay with family friends and fell in love with their spacious, light-filled home. I was blown away by the open-plan kitchen, with its oh-so modern ice-making refrigerator, the floor-to-ceiling glass in the sunny living room, and my very own ensuite, with a spacious walk-in shower that seemed bigger than our entire bathroom at home! The one thing I really remember though, was a special room that sat separately from the house, adjacent to the garage. My mother’s friend called it her ‘crafting shed’. As an arty, dreamy type, who loved painting and collage, I was smitten. Imagine patterned paper, balls of wool and fabric cuttings, all colour-coded and neatly stuffed into wall-mounted cubbyholes, drawers over-spilling with crayons…

In her studio, however, artistic energy bounces off every surface and colour bursts from each corner – it is her kaleidoscopic creative zone. Lucy, who came second in BBC2’s The Great Interior Design Challenge three years ago, trained as a textile designer and has always favoured a happy palette.
