When it comes to home renovating, a quick discussion in the HB office revealed that many of us agree we should forget January, with all its bleakness and false optimism, in favour of early autumn. We say, now is the time to see the art of the possible in your home… that there’s simply no better moment to get projects mapped out and moving in the right direction, and it’s why, in this issue of…

ARTISTIC LICENCE This year marks 150 years since the birth of Henri Matisse, celebrated for his use of colour and simple shapes cut from paper. His work has long inspired other artists and designers and, unsurprisingly, the lively abstract style lends itself perfectly to pieces for the home… 1 Bring a fun energetic touch to walls with the Naive Shapes collection by MuralsWallpaper. Created to celebrate the style of Matisse’s paper cut-outs, these abstract statement wallpaper murals are £36/sq metre. 2 The nostalgia of childhood craft sessions creating paper collages plays a starring role in Habitat’s new Symbols and Papercut collection. The range comprises vibrant colour block rugs and cushions (see top). TELL US HOW IT ALL BEGAN… Mark and I were bidding against each other at an auction house in the Welsh Valleys when we first met. At the time, he had a shop selling good quality used household items and antiques. We opened our first shop together – selling architectural fittings and salvage – in south Wales in the late 1970s. During that period, we’d been trying to restore our home and were finding it difficult to buy usable old fixtures and fittings. As newlyweds, we relocated to Herefordshire and started selling from our outbuildings. HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS THE BARNS THAT NOW HOUSE YOUR BUSINESS? We were on the lookout for a plot with more space when we drove past Whitecross Farm near the village of Bridstow, just outside Ross-on-Wye. The…
