An extra-warm welcome to this, our special 30th birthday issue! The world has changed a lot since House Beautiful launched, and the way we build, design and decorate our homes is now entirely different. Technology has driven much of this change, enabling us to live in a more ecofriendly way. When you consider that the first energy-efficient Passive House was built only in 1988, we’ve made great progress. When it comes to decor, I remember the 1980s style so vividly. I’d just started working in magazines and was living in my first (tiny) flat in London. As fabric designer Tori Murphy poses serenely in her new workshop, it’s hard to believe she’s only just moved into the converted nursery school near Nottingham. Ever busy, Tori is putting the finishing touches to her latest collection, dealing with orders and working on new collaborations. And, while running her business, she’s bringing up two children with her partner Joby in the half-renovated house they’ve just relocated to.
