Living by the sea is a dream for many of us. Friends of mine recently made that dream a reality by setting up home on the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. The allure is obvious – wide open skies, fresh salty air, beaches and clifftops with panoramic views. It’s safe to say the pandemic has intensified the desire to move to the coast and sent many of us eyeing-up property in seaside spots around the country – me included! In celebration of the great British seaside – where many of us are also likely to be heading for our holidays this year – we’ve dedicated much of this issue to coastal living. MUTUAL INTERESTS Lara Mantell (above left) and Florence Hawkins met while teaching at the University of the Arts, London, and quickly connected over their shared interest in silk-screen printing using natural dyes. Together they set up Ceres and began teaching workshops all over the city, eventually finding a studio in Brixton in south London to call their own. NATURAL FINDINGS They extract colours from the bio-wastes and plants they have either grown themselves, foraged locally or gathered via donations. These are then turned into thick pastes for screen printing on materials including linen, silk, wool and paper. INSPIRED PARTNERSHIP Ceres’ latest collaboration with Heal’s was an enjoyable creative challenge and an opportunity to champion sustainable design. Soft hues of orange, green, yellow, coffee brown and sky blue combine across a collection of cushions and artwork…
