“There is a distinct lack of personalisation in alert sounds and ringtones these days” A funny thing happened this month. Playing dad taxi to my daughter and a gaggle of her friends, I happened to be playing Green Day’s seminal American Idiot album on the car stereo when, during Dearly Beloved (the fourth part of the ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ suite), they mistook the ‘tings’ on the track to be the ‘ting’ of a new message arriving on their iPhones and, in unison, held their devices aloft to check. This happened several times, each time their faces were illuminated by their screens a split second apart in the darkness in a scene not unlike a certain Queen video. It goes to show that there is a distinct lack of personalisation in alert…

hands on with apple’s 14-inch macbook pro

THE MACBOOK PRO 14-INCH (2021) IS THE SMALLER OF THE TWO NEW MACBOOK PROS THAT APPLE RECENTLY UNVEILED (THE OTHER BEING THE MACBOOK PRO 16-INCH (2021)), AND IT’S NOW POWERED BY A CHOICE OF THE M1 PRO AND M1 MAX, APPLE’S MOST IMPRESSIVE CHIPS SO FAR. WE MANAGED TO GET HANDS ON WITH A MODEL RECENTLY, SO HERE’S WHAT WE THOUGHT. Let’s be honest: what Apple has created here is hands-down the best laptop for creative professionals we’ve ever tested. In the past, people have criticised Apple for putting design over functionality, even despite its users’ wishes, which led to previous MacBooks coming with a paltry amount of ports just so that they could be thin and light. The good news is that Apple hasn’t just been listening to its customers,…

5 things we learned this month

Apple news Apple getting sued, yet again Apple faces another lawsuit regarding the iOS App Store. As noted by AppleInsider, class-action lawsuit filed against the company in California claim that Apple is engaged in anti-competitiv behaviour by limiting devices that use iOS to only using iOS, and by making developers agree to App Store terms that include restricting third-party app stores and payments, funnelling all business through Apple’s own in-app payments from which Apple can take a commission. The suit states, “Apple’s motive for its anticompetitive conduct was simple: Apple did not want its iOS device-relate revenue stream to end when a consume bought an iOS device, like it generally does when consumers purchase iMac and MacBook computers” and claims that Apple “concocted and maintained a plan” to keep generating revenue by “cornering…

buyer’s guide

It’s that time of year again, iCreate folks. All the Apple events are done for the year, and we now know what the next generation of iPhones and iPads looks like. And what a line-up it is! As Apple aficionados we’re blessed to have the very best choice on the market. We are well and truly spoilt for choice. And this year is certainly no different. The new iPhone 13 range brought with it not one, but four new models to the market. As you can imagine, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive of the iPhone 13 models is sizeable (in more ways than one), but which iPhone is right for you is still a very personable choice. Throw into the mix last year’s iPhone 12 lineup, and the…
