home to the force

Fierce winds whip through the cracks in the stonework of the ancient church on Skellig Michael. This island off the coast of Ireland is a peculiar place, with archaic architecture that seems to have come from a different world. In the wind’s whistling you can almost hear the walls echoing the strains of the Gregorian chants that the monks must have sung here 1,000 years ago. Sometime in the 12th century they’d abandoned the island and moved to the coastal Augustinian Monastery at Ballinskelligs on the mainland. In the centuries that followed, visitors to Skellig Michael became very rare. But that suddenly changed thanks to an event in the not-so-distant past… The craggy twin-peaked outcrop of Skellig Michael rises from the rough waters of the North Atlantic around 7 miles off…

interview: understanding aging

Some age researchers say that we could potentially live to be 1,000 years old. What’s your opinion? I wouldn’t go that far. But 100 years is a very realistic goal these days. Today we have excellent treatments for most of the risk factors that can promote aging. The objective of anti-aging medicine is not to achieve eternal youth and beauty, as some might imagine; rather, we want to keep patients energetic and healthy. Anyone whose life expectancy would normally be 80 should be able to gain 15 or 20 years of life—and remain in good shape both physically and mentally. Is there a treatment for old age? My medical colleagues and I are not trying to halt aging. The secret is to grow older but to remain young—and that is not…

the list of the best vitamin sources

Bell peppers are rich in vitamin A and B vitamins and have particularly high levels of vitamin C. One lemon contains around half of our entire vitamin C requirement for the day, but lemons are no match for sea buckthorn. The small orange-yellow fruit has almost 10 times more vitamin C than lemons contain. In addition to vitamin C, pomegranates also have antioxidant properties that can slow down the aging process. SEA BUCKTHORN: 400 mg vitamin C (per 100 grams) PEPPER (RED): 180 mg vitamin C (per 100 grams) LEMON: 50 mg vitamin C (per 100 grams) POMEGRANATE: 10 mg vitamin C (per 100 grams) PHOTOS: Juanmonino/Getty; ImagesBazaar/Getty; Privat; Adobe Stock; Kim Kulish/Science Source/Getty Images.…

how do you decontaminate a home?

It was supposed to be their dream house, a country property with lots of room for the kids to play outside. The family felt the house in Australia’s southeastern state of Victoria was well worth the purchase price of 500,000 Australian dollars (about $350,000). However soon after they’d moved in, the children began getting sick: They were experiencing restless nights, breathing problems, and skin rashes. The parents took them to the doctor, but the problem remained a mystery. Then one day representatives of the local council came to their door with important information: The previous owners had operated a clandestine meth lab in the house; the children’s symptoms were a result of residues. This was the moment that the family’s dream became a nightmare—and the moment they realized their new…

smarter in 60 seconds drugs

Where is cannabis legal? When North Dakota decriminalized cannabis in May, it became the 25th state to have done so. At this point in the evolution of the controversial plant’s legality it is still fully illegal in 14 states, but it is fully legal in 11 states plus the District of Columbia. In a total of 36 states there are laws permitting medical usage. Legalized means even recreational use is permitted, and decriminalized means there is no risk of prison time for possession, but it’s possible to receive a fine for possession of certain amounts. The possession and sale of cannabis remains a federal offense, as it has been since 1970, but it’s clear the tide is turning on cannabis prohibition. Why do dolphins toy with pufferfish? We can add dolphins to the…
