welcome

When I wrote my last letter, COVID-19 was a far-off problem in China. Now it’s upon us and the rapid turn of events has left us reeling. The IH team is hunkered down at home, supporting each other and taking each day as it comes, just like you. Please bear with us – there’s a chance we’ve featured items you won’t be able to get hold of now, but we’re doing our best to keep up! If there was ever a time to find solace in your home and joy in simple pleasures, this is it – and that’s what Ideal Home is all about. P.S. If cooking is your lockdown pastime, check out our bakes on page 140. They’re from our new professional Test Kitchen – when you see this…

It’s ideal if you already have a lot of colour in your room but you’re looking for something more adventurous than plain white. We love the flash of coral on the reverse, too. Orla Kiely exclusives at John Lewis The queen of retro prints has an exclusive new collaboration with John Lewis & Partners. Punchy, graphic motifs cover small storage, tableware and textiles that can’t fail to bring a little happy to the kitchen. The cut-velvet cushion updates kitsch to chic while bedding and lampshades will boost your boudoir. ECO-CHIC AT PRIMARK For those who wish to be kinder to themselves and the world…

when two become one

When the house next door came on the market, Miranda Davies and her husband debated whether or not they should buy it. ‘We knew that if we didn’t, then someone else would snap it up and develop it,’ says Miranda. ‘So we bought and then rented it out for 10 years while getting the funds together, with the plan of eventually combining the two properties. We wanted to create one large house that would accommodate our growing family of four children and numerous pets. The two houses were originally designed by the same architect, so from the exterior they could always have been one building.’ With the couple envisaging a dramatic makeover, they commissioned architecture and design team, Robinson Van Noort, to help.
