THREAD MELODIES The cover for this issue of Inspirations has an undeniable musical flavour with the contrasting ivory and black piano keys beautifully complementing the delicate blackwork designs that decorate a lovely pincushion. Come to think of it, embroidery and music have quite a few things in common, including vocabulary. We often hear expressions like ‘stitching rhythm’ or ‘colour harmonies’ or we can have a ‘symphony of stitches’ in a project, all phrases that include words associated with music. We could think about embroidery stitches as being like musical notes – put together in the right combination, repeated the correct number of times and executed with care and precision, they produce a melody as pleasing as any great musical score. And like a musical score, each individual can take the same notes…
