Apple has announced that for the second fiscal quarter of 2022, the company posted $97.3 billion in revenue, up 9 per cent year over year. The company also posted $25 billion in profit – both the revenue and profit are all-time records for the March quarter. The iPhone continues to be Apple’s top money-maker, bringing in $50 billion in net sales, about $2 billion more than Q2 2021. Of the company’s product categories, Apple’s Services division saw the biggest increase (17 per cent), from $16.9 billion in 2021 to $19.8 billion in 2022, a $2.9 billion increase and a new record. Long after its initial announcement back in August, and following considerable controversy over an as-yet-released component, Apple is expanding to the UK an iPhone feature designed to protect children against sending or receiving sexual content. Communications Safety in Messages eventually launched as part of the iOS 15.2 point update in December. Until now, however, this has been limited to the US. The Guardian broke the news that Apple announced plans to bring this feature to the UK, although the time frame remains unclear. When enabled on a child’s device, the feature uses an on-device AI tool to scan all photos received over Messages for nudity. Several weeks after the release of iOS 15.4, Apple has begun beta-testing iOS 15.5 (and associated operating systems like iPadOS, tvOS and watchOS). With iOS 15.4, Apple released what seemed like all previously-announced features and had nothing left to do until iOS 16 makes its debut at WWDC, but iOS 15.5 still has a few minor changes in store for us. The first beta of iOS 15.5 was released on 5 April. After an App Store policy came to light in April that threw countless apps into limbo, Apple has issued a clarification (fave.co/3P4LVz3) about its App Store Improvements process that will give developers much more time to update their apps. Apple also clarified that the policy isn’t new. Since 2016, when the App Store Improvements process was launched, some 3 million apps have been removed from the store to “ensure apps work for the vast majority of users and support our latest innovations in security and privacy”. Apps that were previously downloaded continue to work, but new users will not be able to find them in the App Store. Of the three big Apple events of the year, WWDC is the most reliable: in each of the past 15 Junes, like clockwork, Apple has held a big get-together for its developer partners and announced a raft of important software updates. The September iPhone launch and the March/April spring event seem almost unpredictable by comparison.
