Apple has posted its third quarter 2022 results and somehow still managed to post record a June quarter revenue record of $83 billion. iPhone sales remained strong while Services climbed again. Apple had warned last quarter that continued supply constraints would affect revenue in the quarter and it’s clear that it had an impact, though a smaller one than feared. Stock for MacBooks and iPads have been constrained for months and those two categories saw the steepest decline, with the Mac posting a 10 percent year-over-year decline and the iPad dipping 2 percent. Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who is typically quite reliable with such things, has a new report claiming that iPadOS 16 is being delayed by about a month. Citing the common “people with knowledge of the matter”, Gurman says that instead of releasing the new iPhone and iPad operating system updates at the same time, Apple will release iOS 16 in September as expected but iPadOS 16 will come in October. It’s not uncommon for macOS to follow a few weeks after iOS, but the iPad software has always updated on the same schedule as its iPhone sibling. Apple and Sir Jony Ive have finally split, with the two parties agreeing to end the $100m consulting agreement signed in 2019. According to The New York Times, the parting was a mutual decision. Apple executives had begun to question the expense of the agreement and the departure of several in-house designers to Ive’s LoveFrom company, the paper reports, while Ive had grown frustrated at not being able to freely work with other clients. The arrangement prohibited LoveFrom from ‘taking on work that Apple found competitive’. This brings to a close a 30-year association between Ive and the Cupertino company, which he joined in 1992. Since the Apple Watch Series 3 isn’t compatible with watchOS 9 this autumn, this is very likely the last update it will receive. Unlike iOS and macOS, Apple doesn’t release watchOS updates for older devices. It’s a day with a Y in it, so Apple must be getting sued. This time, the Cupertino company stands accused of profiting heavily – and anticompetitively – by giving its own Apple Pay service preferential treatment on the iPhone platform. The class-action lawsuit was filed in US district court in Northern California last month by the law firms Hagens Berman and Sperling & Slater. It complains that Apple allows its own Apple Pay service to access the NFC chip on the iPhone, while prohibiting rival services such as Google Pay from doing the same thing.
