When iOS 16.2 arrived, it brought several new features, including Apple Music Sing, iCloud Advanced Data Protection and the Freeform app, as well as a less-obvious upgrade to a new Home architecture that’s ‘more reliable and efficient’. However, in January, Apple has pulled the option in the Home app to upgrade. When opening the Home app in iOS 16.2, users were met with a ‘Home Upgrade Available’ in the Software Update tab in the Home Settings. Now that option is gone. But there’s still an update waiting for you to install in Settings. Apple pushes important security updates to older phones from time to time (the last was in August 2022) and this is one of those times. With about four months to go until WWDC, the rumours are starting to give a clearer picture of iOS 17. And from what we can tell, it looks a lot like iOS 16. Following a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (fave. co/3RnG3Cv) that claims iOS 17 would have fewer features due to resources shifting to the AR/VR headset (see page 12), LeaksApplePro (fave.co/3RjhgPY) claims that: “This version of iOS will focus more on stability and efficiency” and “there won’t be many visual changes.” That doesn’t mean iOS 17 will be a carbon copy of iOS 16. After the iPad Pro, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro all gained support for speedier Wi-Fi 6E with their latest releases, it’s all but certain to come to the iPhone 15 in the autumn. However, those chips won’t be made by Apple. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (fave.co/3RlaB7R), Apple has “halted the development of its own Wi-Fi chip for a while” as it focuses on the development of 3nm processors for the Mac and iPhone. Apple had been working on a standalone Wi-Fi chip to replace Broadcom’s version in its device, but Kuo says “investors should not be worried about Apple’s own Wi-Fi chip affecting Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chip business in the foreseeable future”. Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports on Twitter (fave. co/3Jv4X1c) that Apple will launch an “all-new design foldable iPad” next year with “a carbon fibre kickstand”. According to his supply chain sources, Kuo says he is “positive” about the launch of the next-gen tablet, a rare proclamation from the analyst who usually errs on the side of caution. Kuo offers few details about the new device, but there are already rumours that Apple is working on an iPad larger than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, possibly as large as 16 inches. It’s not clear how Apple would market the device or how small it would be when folded. Thus, I’m taking a cautious approach to iPad shipments for 2023, predicting a YoY decline of 10-15%.
