fun with ibeacon

One of the more interesting technologies to emerge from iOS 7 is iBeacon, which allows an app to detect when it is near a small wireless sensor called a beacon. Ultimately, iBeacon is all about finding users’ relative proximity to a location, rather than their GPS position. Commercially, this technology could have a significant impact on how consumers shop, generating anything from discount coupons to wireless payment prompts when an iDevice is in range of a store’s iBeacon. From a technical perspective, iBeacon allows any device with a Bluetooth 4.0 chip (Bluetooth Low Energy, or BLE) running iOS 7 to detect where it is in relation to a beacon. Here is a list of iOS devices that meet these criteria: iPhone 4S or later • iPad, 3rd generation or later • iPad mini, 1st…

the best travel apps for photos & sharing

Facebook (Free) Yes, you know Facebook well. But did you know that you can create photo albums on the fly through the Facebook app? It’s hard to beat the world’s largest social network in terms of reach and functionality when you want to share your vacation photos. Creating a photo album on Facebook from your iPhone is easy. Just open the app, and from the Newsfeed window, tap on Photo. Select the photos you’d like to include in your Facebook photo album and tap on the bottom right status icon (looks like a pen and paper). Instead of tapping on Post, tap on the Album icon (see image). There you can name, edit, and set privacy settings for your new album. The Must-Haves: Dropbox (Free) Dropbox—the ultimate online storage solution for photos, documents, notes, and videos—offers…

the best travel apps for booking

Kayak Pro ($0.99) When you’re ready to book a trip, use Kayak Pro. This robust app searches through hundreds of travel sites for the best deals. In addition to finding flights, Kayak can also help you score great deals on hotels and car rentals. One of my favorite features is the app’s handy search function that helps you see each airline’s baggage fees. Once you find a good deal, you can purchase your tickets right through the app, then take advantage of the flight tracker and itinerary management features. To top it all off, the app even includes terminal maps for over 100 airports around the world. The Must-Haves: Orbitz Flights, Hotels, Cars (Free) Search for and book flight, hotel, and car rental deals through the Orbitz app. The “nearby tonight” feature lets you book last-minute…

time for an upgrade!

When designing iOS 7, Apple put a lot of effort into redefining the look and feel of the user interface. Although iOS 7’s built-in apps are better than before, each app still leaves much to be desired. Thanks to the App Store, you have over one million apps to choose from to replace the default apps on your iPhone or iPad. WhatsApp Messenger (Free) Apple’s free iMessage service is useless if you want to text someone that isn’t using an iOS device. With WhatsApp, you can send a text message to anyone, provided the recipient uses the app as well, without using your monthly allotment of texts. In addition to text messages, you can also send voice messages, group messages, photos, and even videos for free. ProCamera 7 ($1.99) If you’re even…
