skeleton bay dream chasing on the namibian coast

The twin-prop plane banks hard to the right as the captain announces that we have begun our descent to Walvis Bay Airport. Outside the small window lies a sea of undulating yellow, a vast ocean of desert and sand dunes that stretch into the belly of Africa. Most of the passengers have their heads pressed against the window to get a better look, but Thomas King stares straight ahead, gripping the armrests of his seat. His palms are sticky with sweat. It's not just the motion of the plane that unnerves him. the short history of skeleton bay

The Namib is one of the oldest deserts known to man, and its coastal dunes are the tallest in the world. But unlike this barren wilderness, Skeleton Bay is an infant in geological terms. Thirty years ago, it didn’t even exist. A geological study published in 2003 revealed how the sandspit has changed drastically in shape and size over the past few decades. the power of water

For many of us, the restrictions of the past year have only fueled our love of exploration and our desire to travel and experience the world around us, whether by board or by boat. It’s an odd feeling, the intense, collective longing for these kinds of activities to be possible again. But with borders remaining shut for much of the time between our last issue of Paddle World and now, we were forced to find other ways to feed our passions, finding new adventures and missions closer to home or spending time escaping virtually with online entertainment or social media, losing ourselves in stories and articles of places far away. Stories and articles like those we have chosen to feature on our website and magazines, like this issue of Paddle World/SUP…

berlin by board

It was a cool autumn day in November 1990 when the Berlin Wall lost its mission to divide the city in two. For over 40 years, the division of Germany between the Allies had physically divided the country and even crisscrossed the capital with a wall. Just imagine: you live in a city, one half of which is walled-in, with the alleged enemy on the other side—and maybe your cousin, too. When the wall fell on November 9, 1990, it began a liberation for the residents of West Berlin and a fundamental change for all subsequent residents of East Germany. When people in Germany talk about the “change,” they don't just mean that notorious November, but the many grueling years of a divided nation trying to grow together that followed. "…an…
