Crochet and autumn always feel like a match made in heaven, with the chill in the air a perfect excuse to indulge in our favourite pastime! We love to see the trees changing colour and dig out warm jumpers from last year, while cowls, fingerless mitts and the occasional hat are ideal for helping you make the transition to cooler days effortlessly. With that in mind, this issue is packed with speedy projects in soft, sumptuous yarns to relish. Whether you’re keen to see how granny squares can make a gorgeous hat, you want some snug socks with trims in berry red, or fancy a statement necklace in warm autumnal hues, we’ve got you covered. Try our vintage-inspired handwarmers on page 46, or get to grips with slipstitch with Joanne Scrace’s spiral…

yarn review

1 Wendy Fleur DK Wendy Fleur DK is the newest yarn from Thomas B Ramsden’s. It’s a beautifully soft mixture of 44% cotton, 28% tencel and 28% acrylic. The yarn is brushed with a slight sheen and lends itself to crochet because it’s light and airy but has a good stitch definition. Although there are only eight shades, the colours range from pastel to darker shades and are suitable for adults and children, but not babies because if its fluffiness. As the yarn is light it would be fab for cowls, scarves and throws and as it’s machine washable on a 30 degree synthetic wash it’s practical too. There are 350 metres per 100g ball (£4.99). crochet news

WE love Last chance at the beach We love a CAL (crochet-along) with a heartfelt message. Scheepjes’ Last Dance At The Beach CAL was an idea pitched by the talented Marinke Slump, but her death last year halted the plan in its tracks. However, thanks to beautiful design contributions from 12 amazing crocheters and bloggers, including Kirsten Ballering, Atty van Norel and Dedri Uys, the CAL came to fruition earlier this year, and now serves as a memorial to the sorely missed Marinke. The blanket is made up of repeats of a dozen individual granny squares, in a number of stunning colourways including Dancing Under the Stars. Patterns and kits are still available, so you can join in too. Find everything you need at can join in too. Find everything www.scheepjes.com and…

the wool kitchen

How did The Wool Kitchen come about? I was working part time as a receptionist and felt that I needed a creative, positive change. Craft has always been part of my life, I have a background in art and an overwhelming interesting in colour. It made sense that yarn dyeing would be a good option. I took a leap of faith and haven’t looked back – I’ve been very lucky! What are your main aims with the brand? For me, yarn dyeing is very much about being excited about what you’re crocheting or knitting. The way the colour changes in a variegated yarn makes you want to carry on with the project – you don’t know what’s coming up next! It’s important that people are encouraged to craft. It’s good building friendships and…
