Apple’s long-rumoured spring event finally took place on 8 March, bringing with it an incredible array of new Macs, iPhones and iPads – plus the surprise demise of the 27-inch iMac. Entitled ‘Peek Performance’, the event also unveiled the next phase in the evolution of Apple silicon, with the M1 Ultra joining the M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max chips inside the company’s line-up of desktop and mobile devices. With rumours circulating for months that Apple would unveil a new high-powered version of the Mac mini at its spring event, few could have predicted what was actually revealed: the all-new Mac Studio. Looking like a pumped-up Mac mini to some, a reincarnation of the much-loved G4 Cube to others, the new Mac Studio is effectively a showcase for Apple silicon, with the mid-range model packing a brand new M1 chip – the M1 Ultra.
