We recently stayed a couple of nights on the New Hall Farm CL site near Appleby in Cumbria. It was a lovely farm site, admittedly near the A66, which didn’t really bother us. We decided to walk into Appleby on a Saturday. It was a hot day and we forgot the water bottle and the OS map. After a long time, and definitely feeling I was going to die, we found a pub on the outskirts, had a long drink and lunch, and decided to order a taxi to take us back as we were in no fit state to walk. But there was no taxi; only one in Appleby and it was fully booked. Also, there were no buses on a Saturday in Appleby. Eventually, we found the phone…

I was reading the letter (Sept, p122) from a gentleman called Charlie who had a problem with his Elddis Majestic 175 alarm that kept going off. I, too, had the same problem with my Elddis Majestic 115. It was caused by the bonnet sensor making an indentation in the soundproofing on the underside of the bonnet when it was shut. Over the first three years we owned our 115, the indentation became deep enough that, when I set the alarm, the sensor thought the bonnet was being opened and set the alarm off. I purchased a pack of self-adhesive pads that people use on the bottom of furniture legs and stuck one over the indentation under the bonnet, resulting in the alarm not going off any more. Thoughtless or what (see left)? This is very bad for the reputation of all motorhome and campervan owners! Sue Hubbard While waiting for our friends to arrive at Chieveley services to go to Newbury Retro Festival in August, my wife and I couldn’t believe what we saw. A motorhome came at great speed, turned into the parking bay across two spaces then let their dogs out to do their business, which was not picked up, then put some rubbish out on the car park surface and left it there. ED In the September letters pages, a reader queried why the costs of UK campsites could be so high in comparison to those offering ACSI discounts on the Continent. Here’s what you had to say… I have no particular flag to fly in favour of the Caravan and Motorhome Club (C&MC), other than I am a member and I often use its sites. However, I do feel the unnamed author of a recent letter is being a little biased in his/her review. ACSI sites are indeed cheaper at certain times of the year, but you do have to pay to procure an ACSI card.
