The recent extremely hot spell got me thinking about those pieces of kit that make all the difference when on site. At the time, I was away with friends and family and I had somehow ended up sleeping in a tent on the hottest week of the year. And, while sweating under canvas, I began to appreciate how good our wind-up lanterns and torches, the power pack with its own solar panel and especially the wind-up fans that gave us that essential breeze at night were. These were all designed for people with limited or no access to power and, as such, did not require any mains electric so their impact on the environment and their cost of use was zero.
