This has been quite a month. Not only have we been treated to the launch of some rather exciting new models but, after a hiatus of several years, MMM is now ready to relaunch the Motorhome Awards. Better still, along with our sister magazine, Campervan, we’re also launching the Campervan Awards. The awards have a twin purpose – to help buyers choose the best model on the market and also to reward the manufacturers and converters who have produced outstanding new motorhomes and campervans. We will feature all of the winners in both awards in the December issue of MMM. But back to those new model launches we’ve been attending. Are motorhomes just for the super rich? We’ve have been out on the road in one of our four motorhomes for 40 years. We’ve always enjoyed MMM magazine… particularly the reviews of new ’vans, just in case we decided to trade up for something newer or different. We remember dear John Hunt telling us about his travels and reviewing ’vans that could be of interest to us. He always came across as a down-to-earth bloke who recognised that not everyone could afford a top-of-the-range super ’van. The last edition of MMM reviewed two ’vans. One cost nearly £93,000 (which didn’t even have a TV!) and the other an eye-watering £110,000. If there’s one certainty about the motorhome life, it is to expect the unexpected, especially when dealing with the weather. About a third of the way through our recent trip to France, I was sitting peacefully under the awning somewhere in the Vosges and wondering if life could be any better. The sun was out and there was a cooling breeze. Without warning, a massive gust of wind swirled around me, picked up the awning and twisted it, before dropping it back down to earth. Well said, Susan Martineau! We were citizens of the European Union with rights of free movement across 27 countries: 52% of us chose to give up those rights along with our EU citizenship. We were repeatedly warned about the consequences of Brexit but dismissed the warnings as ‘Project Fear’. We have no-one to blame but ourselves. I attach a photo of my birthday cake for my big 70. The figure is me with our dog. Lawrence Parker Having seen the two cakes in the June issue, I felt I had to share our special cake that our friends had made for us for our silver wedding anniversary. What an amazing surprise. You will see Freddie wearing chef whites as he was a Michelin star chef who now loves to bbq. Then you have the fishing rod as he and his friend spend many an hour away fishing, plus there is our towcar, Minty, and our miniature schnauzer, Poppy, not forgetting the satellite dish! To all you fellow motorhomers, if you ever get tired of your drab interior or it begins to look dated then let me recommend Premier Furnishings Ltd of Ilkeston (Relux). On a recent visit to Harrogate Show, we came across Relux which had a stall on the showground. We were taken by the company’s experience and knowhow. The staff took time to find out our requirements, then gave me a price for the job, which I thought was very reasonable. It also included tweaks to the design. We were told it could be done within 30 hours, with an overnight stay and hook-up included in the cost. A date was arranged.
