new arrival

Once your tot joins you for family meals, she’ll want to imitate you by using her own cutlery. Trouble is, mini cutlery for kids often isn’t designed with baby hands in mind, which can lead to frustration – and plenty of food thrown on the floor! But this Doddl Baby Cutlery set (£11.95, doddl.com) is different. The fork and spoon are shaped for success, designed to suit your baby’s strong but unpredictable grip reflex with non-slip pads on the handle. The set comes in a handy storage case, making it perfect for daytrips and holidays this summer.…

now i’m a mum, i know…

...A BABY CHANGES YOUR LIFE It’s almost as if there was a part of me that I didn’t realise was unfulfilled until I had a baby. Becoming a mum crushes your ego, but in a good way! The things I used to worry about – superficial stuff like my weight – just aren’t important any more. I’ve got a totally new perspective on life now — everyone should have a baby! ...WE CAN LEARN FROM OTHER CULTURES My partner is Swedish, so we’re really interested in the idea of forest schools and nurseries, which originated from Scandinavian countries. I’m naturally over-protective, but in Scandinavia, everyone’s a lot more open to children being outside, falling down, and learning through play. My partner was so surprised that kids go to school here at four years…

the ultimate sleep secret

Ah, sleep. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? You put your tot to bed, he closes his eyes, soaks up hours of refreshing rest, and wakes with a smile on his face at 7am… But the reality for most of us, even when our babies are well past the stage of needing to feed during the night, is very different. ‘Sleeping well is a skill,’ says Lucy. ‘Learning to be a sound snoozer takes time, practice, a good sleep environment, and some dedicated help from parents.’ And there’s one fundamental skill your youngster has to master before he becomes a master of sleep: how to stitch his sleep cycles together. ‘Sleep isn’t one, long deep slumber,’ says Lucy. ‘We all – babies and adults – sleep in cycles.’ We go from drowsiness…

essential know-how

START AT FOUR MONTHS ‘Babies can be taken swimming from any age – they were in fluid in the womb, so water is a natural environment for them,’ says Tracey. ‘But I recommend swimming from four months on, because by that age babies have enough head control to be able to lift their heads and look around when they’re on their tummies in the water.’ CHOOSE A GOOD POOL ‘Look for a pool that is clean, well-maintained and has easy-to-access changing rooms,’ says Tracey. ‘The water should be 30-32˚C, and at least 32˚C for babies younger than three months old.’ GO AN HOUR AFTER A FEED ‘Aim to go swimming when your baby isn’t tired and isn’t hungry,’ says Tracey. ‘The ideal time is about an hour after a feed. Your baby will still be…

Keep turning those pages… HOW YOU AND your toddler enjoy books together could affect the level of your interaction during storytime. A new study from the University of Michigan compared 37 parent-and-toddler pairs who used three different book formats to read together: print books, basic electronic books on a tablet, and enhanced e-books with sound effects and animation. The results found that the electronic books interfered with parent-toddler engagement, with parents asking fewer questions and commenting less than they did when reading a print book.
