when do we wean?

‘The NHS advice is that you should wean your baby when she’s around six months old,’ says registered nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed, who specialises in infant eating. ‘And the reason that they use the word “around” is because all babies are different, so some babies might be ready slightly earlier.’ It’s not always easy to work out when your baby is ready to move beyond milk into the wonderful world of food. ‘Sometimes you get young babies who seem absolutely fascinated by food – they stare at your plate, they watch you eating, they try to grab your lunch,’ says Charlotte. ‘This doesn’t mean they’re gearing up to tuck into a three-course roast dinner. It’s far more likely to reflect the fact that your baby finds you, and everything you do,…

you’ve got this !

Every woman who gives birth is a hero, no matter what choices she makes or how it pans out for her. You only need to look at the Positive Birth Movement’s social media campaign #soproud – where women and their partners share their birth images and stories – to see that the reasons for feeling proud are many and various. Whether it’s birth without drugs or having twins by caesarean, one clear theme emerges: women appreciate having a space where they can talk freely about their experiences and give themselves praise for the power and strength they found in themselves. This space has been missing in our society, where women are quickly discharged from hospital, often with little or no support in place at home, and left to get on with…

MAKE A LEAF MONSTER This is an activity you’ll want to do outside! Gather a collection of leaves, then squirt some paint and a little glue on to a paper plate and let your toddler use her fingers to combine the leaves, paints and glue. She’ll enjoy feeling the different textures of the leaves and gluey paint on her fingers. Help her to arrange the leaves so that they stick out from the edge of the plate, and bring her monster to life. Wait until dry, then glue googly eyes on to complete your friendly leaf monster! PAINT WITH NATURE No one likes to get paint on their carpet or curtains, so why not take the paints outside instead? Throw away the paintbrush while you’re at it! Your garden is full of different…

what on earth?

Your skin has the potential to go crazy when you’re growing a little person, and you can experience all manner of skin strangeness! These might all sound random but, don’t worry, they tend to be temporary… DARKER NIPPLES It’s believed that the pregnancy hormone hGC increases melanin production, which darkens the skin, especially in areas like the nipples. RED PALMS AND SOLES Around 30-60 per cent of women will experience this from early pregnancy to the end, when your hands and feet go back to normal. It’s due to the increased oestrogen levels and the subsequent increased blood flow to these areas, which makes them appear more red. LINEA NIGRA A fancy name for a brown-ish line that can appear from your belly button running down your tummy and into your bikini area,…
