Good talkÉ Whether it’s ‘mama’ or ‘dada’ your tot utters first, hearing your baby speak is an exciting milestone we mums look forward to. And a new study has found that it’s not what you say to your youngster that supports his language development but the way you say it. The research found that parents who spoke to their child with elongated vowels and exaggerated tones, known as parentese, improved the language skills of their infant more over time compared to parents who didn’t. It’s a term used for any rhythmic, shushing noise – like the sound of a vacuum cleaner, rolling thunder, or clothes tumbling around in a washing machine. And it works because youngsters can focus on that repetitive, soothing sound and block out other, less familiar noises that may disrupt sleep. ‘The trick to using it is to have it on all night,’ says Lucy. ‘When your child rouses into wakefulness at the end of each sleep cycle, if something in his room has changed since he fell asleep,…

three things i’d tell my friends

If you’re thinking of delaying or refusing induction, do your research and speak to other mums. I found a great support group on Facebook called Ten month mamas UK , and chatting to the members helped so much. Don’t panic if you’re told your baby is big. It’s rare for a body to grow a baby bigger than it’s capable of birthing, so trust it to know what it’s doing.…

SHOTBALL CHAMP Using some double-sided sticky tape, make a criss-cross web at toddler-height across the width of a door frame. Scrunch up balls of newspaper and place them in a bucket. Ask your toddler to throw the balls as hard as she can at the open door frame. She might have to stand back or throw some harder than others. When she’s thrown all of the balls, she can pick them all off and start again! CIRCLE OF NOISE Give your toddler a wooden spoon and go on a treasure hunt around the house to find objects that make a different noise when they’re banged. As well as a saucepan, you might end up with a plastic bowl, soft cushion, tin of baked beans, cereal packet, welly… Take them all into the living…
