hello !

Once you’re a mum, you don’t make those whopping life-changing decisions on New Year’s Day any more – they somehow all bob to the surface in this little end-of-summer lull instead. Is it the sight of all the big kids going back to school that triggers us to take stock and wonder what the next year will bring for our little ones? Or just the fact that instead of summer fun, we’re thinking about serious stuff like buying puddlesuits and trying to remember when the clocks go back… Well, we’re here to help. Before you do anything, try our new bedtime routine (page 61) because, frankly, you shouldn’t be making any serious life choices on anything less than a good night’s sleep! If you’re not sure if your youngster is quite…

a leaf out of this book…

A toddler’s curiosity knows no bounds, and neither it seems does a parent’s. A recent survey revealed that a third of mums and dads wanted to learn more about nature, so they can pass on some know-how to their youngsters. If you’re heading off on a woodland walk together now autumn’s on its way, tuck The Little Guide To Leaves (£7.99, Quadrille Publishing) into your bag. She’ll have a great time picking up fallen leaves, and you can use the illustrated pocket guide to play a matching game, and find out fun facts about the tree that grew it. giovanna fletcher

I’m pretty obsessed with sleep. And let’s be honest, it’s a topic most parents become fanatical about very quickly. I’ve always loved my sleep. I could fall asleep anywhere, any place. Backstage during a live performance? Done it. In a rehearsal room while other people are up on their feet acting their socks off? I’ve done it. Under a table in the library…well, at least it was quiet. And lie-ins? Mmm… When I wrote Billy And Me, I would sleep until nine in the morning, get up, have breakfast, shower, then spend a few hours writing, have lunch – then a nap – before cracking on with more writing until dinner time and beyond. It’s quite likely I’d have been in bed by 11pm too. I loved 10 hours sleep a…

take it from me…

‘I regularly practise yoga in my kitchen, and my kids, Rex, four, and Honey, two, join in with me and try certain moves – they especially love the downward dog. Rex mimicked me from when he was about 18 months old. He also had these yoga flashcards that he loved to copy, he’d try for about 10 minutes and lose interest, but he now loves doing the tree pose and headstands against the kitchen cupboards. I’m really pleased that he’s developing an interest in yoga as he’s so full of beans. It’s so easy to just put kids in front of the TV or iPad, but I’m hoping that yoga will be something he’ll integrate into his life as he grows up. If you want to get your kids interested in…

new vaccine

‘When you take your baby for his vaccinations, he’ll be given the new 6-in-1 vaccine instead of the 5-in-1 jab, so he’ll also be protected against hepatitis B, as well as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio and haemophilus influenza type B. Your baby will be given the vaccine at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. It doesn’t contain any live virus, so there’s no risk of developing any of the conditions. About one in 10 children will be a little under the weather following the jab, with symptoms such as irritability, redness around the injection site, vomiting and loss of appetite. But this usually improves in a few days. If your baby was born before 1 August 2017 and has had his 5-in-1 jab, he won’t automatically be offered a hepatitis B jab,…

fantastic freddie!

This is my baby Freddie. He is eight months old and has always been a very easy baby: he sleeps well and eats literally anything you give him. He’s beginning to crawl now, but standing up and sofa-cruising is his favourite. He loves to chase his cats Ozzy and Lola, even though they often run for cover! I wanted to share with you how brave he was when he had surgery to repair his cleft lip. He’s just had his post-op check-up and the lip is healing well. The hospital were wonderful with him and he’s the happiest baby!
