sutton: i want to become the btcc’s best ever

British Touring Car Championship title winnerAsh Sutton says he is on course to achieve his dream of becoming the most successful driver in the category’s history. The 27-year-old made it back-to-back title successes with a sixth place in the second race at Brands Hatch on Sunday, before going on to win the final round and push his career win tally to 24. It was the Laser Tools Racing Infiniti man’s third crown and it puts him one shy of the joint all-time benchmarks ofAndy Rouse and Colin Turkington. Sutton says he has his eyes set even higher and just matching that pair. “I want to equal Turkington’s record as soon as possible and then we will see. But I want to go down in history as the best driver the BTCC has seen,…

working out how to win

Ash Sutton has already put his name pretty near the top of the all-time greats in terms of British Touring Car Championship success. His third title, taken in some style at Brands Hatch on Sunday, has assured him of that. He is hungry for even more success, and there is little doubt that it will come for the Bishop’s Stortford driver. His armoury behind the wheel shows no real weak spots. He has qualifying pace, he has supreme skills when the track is unpredictable, his overtaking prowess is among the best and his speed is unquestioned. What 2021 has added to his skill set is the ability to think about the longer game. If there was one criticism of his run to the 2020 title, it was the elements of impetuosity that…

max doubles-up as lewis loses frantic austin chase

It might only be a few points, but Max Verstappen doubled his lead over Lewis Hamilton in the World championship on Sunday. As he held off the seven-time champion in the closing stages of the race inAustin, Verstappen’s hard-fought victory has given him the tiniest of margins with just five rounds remaining. Before the start of the US Grand Prix, it was a six-point lead.As they left Texas on Sunday night, the gap had grown to 12 points. Advantage Max. Judging by the relief on team boss Christian Horner’s face, he knew the significance of this win and just how close it had been. Red Bull went aggressive with its strategy inAustin, pulling Verstappen into the pits early to gain track position. By doing so, it knew Hamilton would have the fresher…

sutton lauds fresh approach for third tin-top title joy

Ash Sutton says that a new approach to his successful title-winning campaign in the British Touring Car championship will remain with him as he aims to become the division’s most successful driver ever. The Laser Tools Racing Infiniti Q50 man clinched his third crown – and his second in a row – with a sixth-placed finish in race two at Brands Hatch on Sunday before going on to take his fifth win of 2022 in the final event of the weekend. He ended the year 51 points clear of Colin Turkington’s WSR BMW. Sutton says that reining in his racer’s instinct amid the cut-and-thrust of the BTCC has helped him to scoop more finishes and more points – and it is a tactic he will use going forward. Sutton, 27, said: “I loved…

cammish tops the btcc support title winners

Newly crowned three-time Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion Dan Cammish believes stepping down to the Porsche series was a case of taking “one step back to take two forward”. Cammish lost his Team Dynamics British Touring Car drive for this year and opted to return to the Redline Racing squad that had previously powered him to two Carrera Cup crowns. And, after prevailing over Lorcan Hanafin at Brands Hatch last weekend, Cammish believes his stock is “higher than ever”. “Coming back, my reputation was on the line and these young lads are so fast,” said Cammish, who added he will not continue in the Carrera Cup next year and could return to the BTCC. “I will now look at all my options.” Elsewhere, Dan Zelos’s Mini Challenge title triumph went down to the wire,…
