E-bikes aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, so inside this month’s mag we’re focusing on the human side of mountain biking instead The e-bike guide that comes free with this issue is our biggest ever, filled with advice, reviews, features and how-tos. We hope it’s an entertaining and illuminating read. However, we know that pedalling assistance isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so inside this month’s mag we’re focusing on the human side of mountain biking instead. Our cover star Ben Deakin (above) is not only a much humbler and less laddish chap than his ‘OiOi!’ public persona might have you believe, but he’s also a bloody good rider, friends with some of our sport’s top names and has an interesting back story too, all of which makes our feature with him on p48…

TREAT YOURSELF! A CHRISTMAS CRACKER It’s the time of year when carving takes on a more carnivorous meaning, shredding is reserved for leftover turkey and we tend to spend less time in the saddle and more on the sofa. But bike rides over the festive period are actually some of our favourites. A couple of solitary hours outside the house for a blast around the local loops can be just what the doctor ordered in order to stay sane through the Christmas chaos. The winter colours, the fresh air and the fact that most trails and roads are quieter than usual all make for an opportunity that shouldn’t be passed up. Plus, if a quick ride means we can eat more leftovers or pocket an extra couple of pigs in blankets, we’re all…

ART ATTACK When creative imagination meets technical prowess JB Liautard is one of the most creative mountain bike photographers out there, with a talent for not only capturing the rider’s skill, but also blending light, colour and composition to create jaw-dropping action photos. It’s this creativity that led top freerider Thomas Genon (aka Tommy G) to collaborate THIS MONTH Martha Gill, Ben Lawson, kids’ kit, Roberts DOGS BOLX, new bikes from Santa Cruz, Marin, Canyon and Stif with JB on a special photo project for Shimano that would give a glimpse of what happens behind the lens and in the photographer’s imagination. With video edits being such big news these days, what inspired these two to work with still photos for this assignment? “First of all, it’s a completely different approach concerning the riding…

Hey, I’m Martha. I’m 23 years young and from Bolton. You’ll find me racing at events around the world or posting on Instagram. It’s fair to say 2020 was a weird season, with races cancelled and delayed the world over. It felt surreal to finally arrive in Zermatt, Switzerland, at the end of August for the first Enduro World Series round. It was one hell of a race too! Brutal conditions greeted us, with snowstorms and subzero temperatures. Our start was delayed, stages were cancelled and others shortened. We only raced two stages, but it really felt like we were out on the battlefield! I actually had a great time on the slippery terrain. I think being from the UK gave me the advantage of not being fazed by it. I…

jackson goldstone

There aren’t many young riders who can look back on a decade in the spotlight – and especially not at the age of 16! However, that’s the case for Jackson Goldstone, the young shredder from Squamish, Canada. In 2010, aged just six, Jackson’s dad filmed him heading to kindergarten on his balance bike. The video went viral, with well over a million views to date. It was clear this kid was talented and pretty fearless, and that hasn’t changed. At 10 years old he was jumping the 50ft mega ramp at Woodward West, three years later he was pulling cork 720s and he’s now a regular at freeride events including the Audi Nines and Crankworx. What’s even more frustrating is that he’s multitalented, winning and podiuming at both downhill and…

the legs for racing & a head for business

Ben Lawson has been making waves since retiring from XC racing aged 21. He first started a skills coaching business – No Limits Cycling – and then began offering MTB guiding and mini breaks. It wasn’t long before Ben opened a bike shop and workshop of the same name in Malton, Yorkshire, which has grown rapidly. Still just 24, he’s looking forward to taking on new business challenges. “We’ve become dealers for Santa Cruz bikes and are attracting customers from all over the country,” says Ben, who still competes from time to time, although it’s mostly enduro races these days. His holistic set-up lets customers enjoy a weekend break in Malton and spend a day with him riding demo bikes around the moors and Dalby Forest before placing their order, then when…
