new year, new gains

Musician Johnny Cash used to say ‘get rhythm’ but I say ‘get tense’. Well, at least in the gym. In other words, contract your muscles. I say this due to a phenomenon called the law of irradiation. We are in the business of moving heavy weights efficiently and safely to build better bodies. In the beginning of a new year we always find ourselves looking for ways to improve and become stronger. With the remnants of 2015 fading into a distant memory we have the strength at the beginning of a new year to step outside our comfort zones, try new methods and push some big iron. The law of irradiation was first discovered by British physiologist Sir Charles Scott Sherrington and is part of a group of physiological laws collectively…

I’ve learned a lot over the past 13 years of publishing magazines – a lot about bodybuilding, about business, and about myself. However, we often tend to forget a few of the important lessons we learned along the way and need to be reminded. The biggest lesson I’ve learned in business is that the game is constantly changing, and your ability to evolve and adapt is singlehandedly your biggest ally in ensuring your sustainability. BUILD MUSCLE, LOSE FAT Q I’m trying to gain mass and lose fat at the same time. Is it possible and if so, what’s the best way to accomplish this? Jono A To be honest this is very difficult to do. You see, gaining a significant amount of muscle mass requires you to consume an excess amount of calories to support the muscle building process. You need extra proteins which are the building blocks of the muscle tissue, but you also need extra calories and carbohydrates, mainly because insulin is released in response to ingesting carbs and it is a highly anabolic (supports muscle building) hormone. It achieves this because it increases the amount of amino acids that enter the muscle cell and prevents stored amino acids (stored as muscle tissue) from…
