I was dragged up to the Peak District as a youngster on a regular basis. A 45-minute drive from suburban Nottingham took us high up into the heart of the UK’s first national park. Sometimes I enjoyed it, sometimes I rolled my teenage eyes as we hiked and cycled our way around a region I later came to recognise — having seen more of the world — as one of the most beautiful places on the planet. SNAPSHOT Maarika, Jaipur, India During Rajasthan’s hot season, I made the trek to the Amer Fort, just north of Jaipur. Originally constructed to protect the city from invading armies, it offered me some protection, too — only this time from the relentless sun. I made my way up the stone pathway and turned inside an elegant courtyard where a woman in a brilliant yellow dress immediately caught my attention. She was calm, yet still had tremendous presence as she enjoyed the breeze passing over the fort’s ramparts.
