night & day

This month it’s a tale of two covers, as Oprah effortlessly switches up her style from sophisticated to casually cool. The theme of versatility was in the air as Whitney Houston’s rendition of “I’m Every Woman” just happened to be playing on set. Turns out it was music to Oprah’s ears: “This used to be my show’s theme song!” FANCY FOOTWORK Treat yourself to a shoe shine: Whether you’re in athleisure like Oprah, jeans, or a dress, a snazzy pair of sneaks adds some sparkle to your day. Anyone mind if I wear this on the plane home? -OPRAH, WITH CREATIVE DIRECTOR ADAM GLASSMAN AFTER THE SHOOT WINREY; ELI SCHMIDT (2). MAKEUP: SIOUX NESI (2)…

finding solace in solitude

Chris Jackson, EDITOR “THE BEAUTIFUL ONE,” PAGE 108 My personal cure for loneliness is…finding ways to feel the warmth of other minds and lives, or writing a meaningful note to a faraway friend. When I’m alone, I love to…sing loudly. Rap loudly. Dance dramatically. I’m never lonely as long as…I have my own mind. The world is complicated and fathomless, and so is every individual consciousness. Solitude is an excuse to step back from interactions and explore that vast internal and external landscape. Cassie Skoras, O ASSOCIATE ART DIRECTOR “NICOLE’S GUIDE TO HOLIDAY HAIR,” PAGE 63 My personal cure for loneliness is…running, especially through Central Park. It helps me reconnect with everyone around me, even if we’re all strangers. When I’m lonely, I try to remember…that everyone feels that way sometimes, and that’s okay. I’m…

who or what are you most grateful for this year?

My three-legged cat, Kali. She is a best friend who doesn’t judge or ridicule. She is always with me, listening, cuddling, soothing, and reminding me of what’s important in life. Her self-confidence never wavers, and when she flubs, she bounces back quickly, head held high. She is a great role model. ANTONIA ALBANY Santa Rosa, California Two years ago, I lost 68 pounds, and I’ve kept the weight off through a healthy food plan and exercise. After two knee replacements and two hip replacements in the last five years, I was ready for a challenge. I hiked the Grand Canyon this summer—35 miles in five days! Now I’m most grateful for my health, my endurance, and my stamina. SUSAN BRANSCOME Cincinnati My son, Nate, is nonverbal and has autism. We live a great distance from his…
