Being at the printers when the first proof copies of the latest edition come hot off the press has to be one of my favourite aspects of publishing. Way back in the 1980s, I remember newspaper production managers calling for ‘off stone’. As intriguing as it sounds, in fact it had nothing to do with a stone, but was rather the absolute final submission for the Litho positives before the presses were readied to print the daily newspaper. Over time, these terms have evolved to ‘deadline to upload’, ‘deadline to deliver’, and even more deadlines in the print media world.
