Lack of motivation is one of the biggest reasons people fail at their fitness programs, and coming into the holidays where temptation abounds, you need that motivational shield to repel all the confections and libations being thrown at you from all sides. This is why I was immediately intrigued by the “dead man’s test,” which was highlighted in our story “Motivated by Science” on Page 90. The idea goes like this: A behavior is something a living person can do, for example walk, run,…

Two Truths… I once read that your models were never photoshopped and that “every muscle and curve were earned.” Is this still true today? I’m looking for a real magazine with strong, fit, real women — not those who are photoshopped or airbrushed — as role models for my two young daughters. — CHRISTY, VIA EMAIL Editor’s Note: Christy, yes that is still true today, and we take great pride in the fact that we portray women as they are — wrinkles, stretch marks and all! I just read your editor’s note in the Summer 2020 issue and it was nice to read some positive talk and appreciation for others. In this crazy world we live in, it is always great to open your magazine and just read about health, fitness and wellness and…

Study participants completed an intense eightto 10-minute training session on an exercise bike and had their blood drawn before and after the workout. They discovered that exercise prompted an increase in the activity of ubiquitin — aka the “death marker” protein — which targets, attaches itself to and removes wornout proteins in muscles so they can be replaced with new, stronger ones. Keep up those high-intensity interval training workouts! 50 billion The number of dollars the U.S. could save annually in health-care costs associated with metabolic syndromes, heart disease, diabetes and other lifestyleinduced health conditions if people simply ate healthier.
