kayak killer pleads guilty

More than two years after she was charged with murdering her fiancé, Vincent Viafore, 46—who drowned April 19, 2015, after his kayak capsized on New York’s Hudson River (People,June 1, 2015)—Angelika Graswald, 37, pleaded guilty on July 24 to a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide. Graswald, who stood to collect $250,000 in life-insurance benefits, was accused of tampering with Viafore’s kayak and then letting him drown in the frigid river. Her attorney Richard Portale claims it was a tragic accident caused by choppy waters, high winds and the fact that Viafore wasn’t wearing a life vest or wet suit. Graswald, whose sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1, now faces up to four years behind bars but, says Portale, “will be out in December” due to time served. In a…
